I'm really thankful for the between-jobs version of me. She had the hours to be bad at this stuff first, with nobody watching when it didn't work. I'm the one cashing that in now.
Back in August I wrote about CommandDx, the reporting dashboard I built for my own site over a weekend. This month I rebuilt the idea for my day job. Every morning before I'm at my desk, a scheduled task in Claude posts a sales readout: what sold yesterday, how that compares to the daily goal, and why. If we missed, it tells me whether it was traffic, conversion, or order size. It tells me which products jumped and what was on the calendar when they did, whether the email we planned went out and whether it did anything, what paid spent, what promos are coming in the next couple of days, and which numbers to trust. When it's guessing, it says so. And I can ask it questions. If something I want isn't in there, I tweak it, so it shows me exactly what I want, when I want it. It's built around the questions I ask at 8:30am.
This really didn't take me that long to build. I honestly built it in a day, working in between other projects. I gave Claude the article I wrote in August, showed it the report I'd built for myself, and said "I need something like this, but this is for my new job, and these are the goals." See, I learned how to build with AI on my own, between jobs, with nothing to lose, and it's so valuable now. Every single day.
So. If you're searching right now, the time is the asset, even though it doesn't feel like one. If you're in a role and drowning, trying to figure out how to get a monstrous amount of work done with AI, same deal. Whatever you're teaching yourself right now is going to pay you back in spades. Take 100% advantage of it.
